I want to start using Apple iOS MDM but have a few questions

Hi - Our org has about 50 Apple devices.  I was looking at MDM but does the MDM cost anything?  Apple's website keeps referencing MDM provider.  Who is the provider and does the server cost anything or do we have to provide our own MDM server?  We have a lot of Android devices that run on Google Apps for business/Device Policy Manager and it seems like that is a lot easier to use.  Is there something that Apple provides that is similar?

Thanks for your help!

I'm not quite sure if apple actually has a feature itself (loking at it they don;t because they make it easy for thrid party suppliers) for this but normally an MDM solution isn't for free. We are using AirWAtch as our MDM solution. This is a server side setup and it needs a locally installed app on your phone (can be done by the AirWatch console) to manage the device. Pro is that this tool can also manage Android devices, it would be easier to manage all mobile devices using 1 tool right?

There are multiple MDM tools btw, this is just one of them. I did also see some free tools, question is if you would really like to have tools like these to manage your mobile devices but that, eventually, is up to you.

Hi Zack4X4,

A free option is to use Apple Configurator: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/apple-configurator/id434433123?mt=12

It is a good place to start.

Another option, but it will set you back $19.99, is OS X Server's Profile Manager. Here is the link to OS X Server information: https://www.apple.com/osx/server/features/#profile-manager

Both of these can be found in the App Store on your Mac.

Hope this helps.
