Dell inspiron 660 wireless encryption - WEP VS. WPA OR WPA2

Dell Inspiron 660 - 64 bit - Windows 7 Home Premium using AT&T 2wire 642 interface will not allow upgrading to more secure encryption of WPA OR WPA2 on a friend's home system.  When I tried to change it from WEP to WPA or WPA2 wireless setup, lost all internet connectivity.  The 10 digit encryption key is provided by AT&T with their broadband interface.

She is running Windows 7 Home Premium, SP1.  All updates are current.

Any ideas how I can help them fix this?  WEP is completely unacceptable security.

Thanks a ton.

a 10 digit hex number is WEP. If you want to change the encryption, you need to change it on the wireless router/dsl modem.

Thank you.  I will return to update when I can visit this friend towards week end.  Of course, this makes total sense.
