DFS 2012 R2 requirement multiple questions

Hi Experts,

It would be highly appreciated if you can provide answer to questions below.

Can I implement DFS 2012 R2 in a Windows 2003 forest/domain functional level?

Can I implement DFS 2012 R2 with multiple Windows 2003 R2 and Windows 2008  file servers?

Is is mandatory to deploy Windows 2012 R2 file servers across multiple sites and then implement DFS?

Can I implement DFS 2012 R2 and the data resides on the cloud? if so, how can we present the drives to the VMs?

What are the minimum requirements to deploy Windows 2012 R2 DFS?

Should I worry about the OS installed on the domain controllers and the file servers?

- yes you can but there are some limitations (more here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj127250.aspx)

Is is mandatory to deploy Windows 2012 R2 file servers across multiple sites and then implement DFS?
- no, you can start with 2 and add more as required

Can I implement DFS 2012 R2 and the data resides on the cloud? if so, how can we present the drives to the VMs?
- you'd need to have server VM running either in Azure, Amazon EC2 or similar

What are the minimum requirements to deploy Windows 2012 R2 DFS?
- read here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj127250.aspx

Should I worry about the OS installed on the domain controllers and the file servers?
- DFS is a great tool and as long as you know what you're doing and people undurstand how it works, it'll be fine although problems may occur mainly if 2 people are editing the same file on two different servers - you'll get conflicts.

What is on the file servers? How big are the files? Will the same files be accessed by different users at the same time? What is the bandwidth?

If you have the resources, create your own isolated network in VM and play with it. You'll understand how it works and what you could expect although real world test will be a very different experience :)

You can plan to have windows 2012 server as DFS server in each site but minimum is windows 2003 R2.

For DFSR the minimum OS will be Windows 2003 R2.

Hope this helps
