SharePoint Foundation 2010 site down

I have a SharePoint Foundation 2010 SP1 site running on Server 2008, using SQL 2008 R2 for the db. Today it will not come up, altho a subsite, on a different port does work if I open it from within Central Admin, or my desktop if I user http://servername:8001 to get to it. No patches installed last night so that is not the issue.

Not sure what to look for to fix this, I am not real familiar with SharePoint or websites.

Did you make sure it is running in IIS?  Select the site and make sure that it is started.

IIS is running checked that, but while I was in my admin snapins I checked my DNS records, since I noticed I could get to the one subsite using the name of the server and port, but not the primary server by its CNAME, and that is when I found that the CNAME had been deleted during a cleanup of old records. As soon as I created a new name the site was back.
