Network Help

So one of my clients has an ACER Server.
It is only 1 year old , Raid 5 (I know, I know)
32GB RAM, 600GB space on SAS drives OS is ESXI 5.5 and one VM SBS2011.
On this server they are running exchange, File Sharing and limited RDP for Reckon/Remote Access.
My client is complaining about office programs locking up randomly. These lockups happen on computers in the local network ( not the server) These files are all located on the server. EG Excel, Word, Access.

I didn’t think much of it. However my client seems quite frustrated with the situation which has court me off guard about how frustrated she is.

I am really not sure what I should do to help solve this issue. ?
I do notice the Exchange Store is using a massive amount of RAM which I am going to limit overnight. I also am using Trend on the server which I am going to swap to Web root Secure anywhere to reduce the AV footprint.
The NIC’s have the allow to sleep option off.

I am not sure what else I should be doing. Any suggestions on how to figure out the cause of these lock ups would be great.

Is this a local (on premise) or remote (off-site) server?

If you are working with a remote server, you may be looking at a throughput/bandwidth issue.

Just for basic troubleshooting purposes, are the files stored on the server the only ones providing issues?  Can the file be transferred to a local machine and manipulated without error?

One thing to also consider is that the local machine will try obtain detailed information about the share and the file during the open process.  If the connection is slow, this process could time out or lock up an Office application.

There are a few ways to try and combat this, but the first method I would suggest involves changes to the registry. The changes noted below will change the way file information is retrieved and if this is the cause for the slow response and time-outs you are experiencing, will lessen or remove those issues.

Disclaimer: if you are not comfortable with the registry and/or recovery options in the event of a failure, please do not attempt these changes.  I have left the following fairly ambiguous, so if you need more direct instructions let me know.

Add the SuppressionPolicy DWORD Hexadecimal '100000' value to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\Shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\CryptoSignMenu
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\Shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\{3EA48300-8CF6-101B-84FB-666CCB9BCD32}
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\Shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\{883373C3-BF89-11D1-BE35-080036B11A03}

and

Add the Flags DWORD Hexadecimal '00100c02' value to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\SCAPI

Are you using windows 2012 servers? They have an issue with the VMware ESXi recommended nic (E1000). If this is the case, then you should change the adapter.
Did you verify the Event Viewer on the server?

No 2012 OS just SBS2011.

What do these registry changes do exactly ? I am happy to make the changes I just like knowing how things work.

I have not seen any events in the Event Viewer, I have asked the staff to make note of any issues so I can help find any events in order to fix this issue.

In short, the noted registry changes will limit the amount of data pulled from a share drive.

NOTE:  This registry change is made to the workstation, not the server.  I would suggest testing on one of the workstations first before trying to roll this out via GP or the like.
