Mac Thunderbolt Display Problem

I have a user with the following problem with his home setup.
He is attaching his MacBook Air to a 27" Thunderbolt display.
He is using a Bluetooth touchpad and USB connected keyboard :

"My new display isn't playing nice with my MacBook air.
When I plug it in and close the lid on my MacBook the picture comes up in a much sharper resolution, which it is supposed to do, but at some point thereafter the display picture breaks up and then the screen goes blank. I have to unplug it, open the MacBook lid, and then plug it back in to get a picture back. I don't seem to have the problem if I leave the lid open, but I also don't get the nice resolution either.
Could this be a video card issue with the MacBook?"

Let me know what you think the problem could be.
Thank you.

It's necessary to follow the instructions below to ensure that your MacBook doesn't sleep when the lid is closed:

Thanks for the suggestions, but neither of those fixes worked.
It might be a problem with the display cable itself.
We are ordering a new one and we'll see if that does the trick.

    Accepted Solution

The display cable replacement worked. Thanks.
