encrypt LTO5 after it has data on it?

it possible to encrypt lto5 tapes with backups from backup exec already on them?

    I'm afraid not, no. You'd have to read the data back then write out to a new, encrypted, tape.

    You might be able to append encrypted jobs using software encryption; I don't know and have never tried it (but it would be easy to try).

    Hardware encryption is on or off for any given tape.
