365 directory sync tool vs 365 integration in WSE2012

What is the difference between running the Directory Sync Configuration tool & the 365 Microsoft integration in Server Essentials (in Dashboard)?

A few weeks ago, I installed the 365 Microsoft integration from the Essentials dashboard & couldn't complete the dir sync configuration ?

How do they interact? Do you I need to install one or another or both?

I have noticed that with the dir tool installed, it only sync one way, from AD to 365,  I was expecting to sync between both platform?

I also noticed that when I had the Essentials integration service, I could see the users that where setup in the cloud?

All that is a bit confusing, really hoping to get some answers for clarification

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

They are mutually exclusive. You either use one or the other. And both are designed to sync from on-prem to the cloud, not the other way.

Which one would you recommend? Are they different?
Cliff GaliherCommented:
They are different. And it depends on your end goal. If you only want to sync accounts, i'd stick to the essentials integration. It makes provisioning accounts and assigning licenses easier and can all be done from one console. But if you plan on going the ADFS route then you'll need dirsync, so the essentials integration no longer applies.
