Server 2012 standard upgrade

I want upgrade my 2012 server standard to 2012 server R2.

I got a server 2012 R2 disc from my supplier.

I'm now attempting upgrade and its prompting me for a product key.I tried using my Standard edition product act.license but it could not validate key.

My supplier said my current standard key should work but it doesn't.

Do i need need do a license conversion or something?

Windows 2012 product key will not work with Windows 2012 R2 server. If you don't have software assurance, you will need to buy a Windows 2012 R2 license. Windows 2012 R2 server is not licesed with a Windows 2012 server license.

If your supplier provided you with a newer version of the OS, as was pointed out, dealing with software assurance, what type of license did you get? If it is a volume license, you would be able to get the key from the volume license site after you create a login and add your entitlement if not done.
