"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

This could be a few issues. One your browser(s) might be hijacked with addons that are impeading your browsing performance (if one gets installed it also might install same addon to all browsers on computer). One obvious culprit is the ASK toolbar which has a service that also runs with windows and slows down your browsers substantially. If this is the case your best bet is to run the freeware program named ADW Cleaner which is a free download at bleepingcomputer.com. This will remove all toolbars and any crapware effecting your browsers. Also in the control panel under "internet options" open up the "connection tab"  then click "lan settings" and make sure the box that says "automatically detect settings" is unchecked.

Hope this helps.

Go to your Start Menu and Run cmd.exe
type ping www.google.ca

What are your results? Screenshot would be best if you do not understand what you are seeing

Also, what are the details of your connection?
DL/UL Speed payed for?
DL/UL Speed displayed from speedtest?
Connection Type (DSL, CABLE, FIBER, SATELLITE)?

Unchecking automatically detect settings does nothing... only then forces you to manually enter the settings? Not sure where @Micro-Vision got this from.

For internet explorer with that box checked the browser often takes up to 10 seconds to load, with it unchecked 1 second or less.

Correction on my part, it does not force you to manually enter settings, automatic detect settings just overrides manual setting changes. But again, it shouldn't do anything... My browser has it checked and loads in less than a second.

It doesn't make a difference in Windows 8 or 8.1 but it does on every Windows XP, Vista and 7 machine I have worked on. Another thing to try is uninstalling your network driver with "keep driver files" and then reboot your machine. If its network related like you don't have a valid ip configuration this will fix your problem. If its browser related only then its a browser addon or a service like the ask service that is starting with windows that is impeading your browser speed and performance.

If he doesnt have a valid IP configuration his browser would not work at all.... not work slowly....
I am running Windows 7 not 8.1 and still do not to uncheck that box...
