Opening Excel Files in 365

So we are using office 365 without the desktop version.  This means we have to upload to the cloud before opening.  Fine.  But some excel docs still don't open.  What am I missing?

Some of these files have come via email attachments and some of them were created in older versions of windows that is no longer installed on the machine.

The web apps (Office Online as they call it now) have certain limitations, you are most likely hitting some of them. You can review this article for more info:
