To defrag or not to defrag....VM is the question

Should I defrag my VMs?

Environ is ESX 5.5, VMDK files aplenty and Labtech automation tool scheduling defrags when a threshold is hit.

My thoughts are not to defrag a VM, EVER.  Unless in a controlled environment.  I'm thinking that replication is running, Snapshots may exist, backups are running, maybe, and what if ALL of my VMs kick off a defrag at the same's going to kill my host.

So, thoughts on defragging VMs......yes or no and why?

    Accepted Solution

    LVL 61

    Assisted Solution

    1) kills caches
    2) wears off SSDs
    3) Consumes IOPs

In spirit of vmwares best practices you must avoid creating fragmented files, namely never let disk run too full (like >50% on NTFS or >90% on Linux.

I do defragment system areas yearly
And run boot optimization on clone masters
