To defrag or not to defrag....VM is the question

Should I defrag my VMs?

Environ is ESX 5.5, VMDK files aplenty and Labtech automation tool scheduling defrags when a threshold is hit.

My thoughts are not to defrag a VM, EVER.  Unless in a controlled environment.  I'm thinking that replication is running, Snapshots may exist, backups are running, maybe, and what if ALL of my VMs kick off a defrag at the same time....it's going to kill my host.

So, thoughts on defragging VMs......yes or no and why?

Thanks

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Defragmentation:
1) kills caches
2) wears off SSDs
3) Consumes IOPs

In spirit of vmwares best practices you must avoid creating fragmented files, namely never let disk run too full (like >50% on NTFS or >90% on Linux.

I do defragment system areas yearly
And run boot optimization on clone masters
