Outlook Archive

I have a Windows 8 PC running Office 2013.  The user managed to get a virus and cleaning it caused on-going problems so I run the 'refresh your PC without affecting your files' utility.

When I reinstalled Office I went to re-attach an 'archive PST' to outlook, but I can't find any trace of it.  We usually keep these archives on the server but I can's see it in the usual location and there is no trace of any PST on the local machine.

Does anybody have any ideas what could have happened to it?

Are you are running Office 2013 (Desktop) or Office 2013 (Cloud).
(Actually is there a desktop version for W8?)  

I had no end of trouble using the Cloud version of Office 2013 (albeit on my Windows 7 machine) , and discovered (to my horror) that macros are not supported! I quickly cancelled the Cloud version (which is the renewable cheaper version covering multiple machines) and decided to stay with Office 2012 since the desktop version of 2013 was too expensive for me.

That has nothing to do with your problem, though!  :-)

"Without affecting your files" phrase on Windows 8 machines only applies to those files you have specifically "auto" backed up from the Windows 8 PC by having the "File History" turned (through "Control Panel/File History").

When file History is turned on only files stored in your Library ("C:\User\"), your desktop, Contacts, Favourites, and OneDrive (off-line available files only) are saved. It does not include Archived PST's or other data used by programs unless they have been saved using OneDrive.

If you are happy with the Cloud type environment, you could simply use Outlook 2013 (Cloud) (I think it is just called "Outlook") and everything would be held in the "Ethernet" (also I think there may be local copies in case the Internet is down at any time). Of course that only covers your Outlook files.
(and archives).

I would not bother trying to contact Microsoft. It took my 4 days of endless telephone chasing just to eventually find that (being a developer with lots of macros etc.) the cloud version is not right for me.

I would suggest that you hold your data in the future (both archives and ANY other data used in programs) on remote drives attached to your PC network (or the cloud, by which I mean "OneDrive" or some other cloud server to which you are subscribed. I think One Drive allows you to have the files also stored locally, and so file history would save them to the Windows 8 backup drive.

I have a remote drive (attached via USB) and now whenever the main PC crashes (which it just did recently) I never lose any data (although I lost a lot of hair trying to remember what programs I had installed and having to reinstall them all, along with registration codes etc.)

I found the best way is to have the seperate drive (I called it drive "H"). I think Windows 8 has reserved "D" for its "File History" files so you cannot use that drive identifier.

I created a sub-folder on my "H" drive called "DATA", then  each program's data is stored in its own folder with the name of the controlling program (e.g. "H:\DATA\Word", "H:\DATA\Outlook", "H:\DATA\Neo-Pro")
I also save any "settings configuration files that programs use to that same data drive, so I do not lose settings for programs when I need to re-innstall them for any reason. (I hate the "User" folder on drive "C" since it is so easy to lose it).

As a final precausion, I pay "Carbonite" $75-00 per year to continually backup my "H" drive to their system so I will never lose my data on "H" drive.Worth every penny!  :-) (Carbonite also saves the entire "C:" drive as an image regularly, so you can in fact get everything back instantly if your computer fails (provided you use the same computer hardware). I assume that also applies to a Windows 8 version of their software.
