exchange error 118 indexing

I got an exchange error 118 something about indexing.  All of our outlooks clients were disconnected from the server.  The information store services was still running, so I started and stopped the service; that still did not fix the problem.  I then rebooted the mail server and it all came back online.  All of the outlook clients got reconnected.  
When I checked the event log all the events in that time frame are missing and I got one error that states: the exchange store database ... has been patched please backup the database. warning event 9524.

What caused this type of error?

Do a backup of your exchange DB right away. Two possibilities are , bad sectors on hard drive or you have a bad memory module.  check event viewer for any HDD related errors. after a backup of your exchange DB. run diags on memory and harddrive.
