Intel Processor -- Windows 2012 Server

1.  What is the FASTEST Intel Processor
     for Windows 2012 Server currently ?

The Intel E7 processor is the latest and fastest server processor

I have installed Dell & HP servers for most of my clients. normally I always order a server with two or more processors depending on the load I expect the server will have.

For 100 users, you may expect to run Exchange, user shares, possibly a database app or two and DNS, DHCP or other roles. If this is the case, I would include at least 64 gigs of ram for 100 users and possibly 128 gigs if your a budget large enough.

I've been installing servers since 1998 and have seen good and bad. Always order more server than you think you need. Keep in mind users always need more storage, memory and speed as time goes by. I also install 15K SAS drives in my servers. You can't lose with that speed, processing power and ram.

I think you've asked two separate questions.  Performance depends on the purpose of the system and optimizations.

As for recommending for 100 file server users, I wouldn't want to answer that without knowing FAR MORE - what are they accessing?  What are they doing?  What is the network infrastructure like to begin with?  Any IT consultant with experience should be telling you what I am - FILE SHARING is not a CPU intensive thing so you'd be wasting your money getting the fastest CPU.

You asked a couple of days after Intel released their fastest chip to date, so the answer is i7-5960X. Will it run Windows 2012? Yes indeed.

Not that one! As already mentioned disk speed is what matters for fileserving, RAM can be helpful as the OS uses it for read cache but there again the clients probably have enough RAM of their own for read cache. It can't use much RAM for write cache because it all gets lost if power dies. Look at the average disk performance, 10ms to get a single block of data from disk. How many floating point calculations do you want the CPU to make while it's twiddling its thumbs waiting for the disk?

Look at the performance figures in http://globalsp.ts.fujitsu.com/dmsp/Publications/public/wp-sandy-bridge-ep-memory-performance-ww-en.pdf, towards the end of the white paper Fujitsu deliberately knobble the CPU by running slow RAM and disabling interleaving by putting all the RAM on a single channel. The result: poor performance using the STREAM benchmark which is useful when designing a high performance cluster to predict the weather; but still good performance under the SPECint benchmark which is useful when designing for commercial applications such as fileserving.

Pick the 100 - 3400 user one and look at the spec under "Customize and buy" - it's got (1) Intel® Xeon® E5-2407v2 (2.4GHz/4-core/10MB/80W) Processor - overkill really. Look at the (50 - 1300) user ones - even slower CPUs.

Try again with Dell:

http://www.dell.com/uk/business/p/powervault-nx/fs - see the middle one for 500 users, it's got an Intel Xeon E5-2609 2.40GHz,10M Cache, 6.4GT/s QPI, No Turbo, 4C, 80W plus 4GB RAM.

Google doesn't come up with anything useful for "IBM 100 user windows storage server", but you can phone them and see what they recommend, it won't have a fast CPU though since there's no sense in wasting all that electricity when a 60W CPU will do the job.
