Dell server memory configuration question

I have a Poweredge R420 with 12 gig of memory.  Can I add a 16 gig module?  If not what configuration do I need to increase is to at least 24 gig?

What is your current configuration?  Do you have one or two processors?  If you have two processors, you MUST have the same memory configuration for both.

yes two.  Do you have a visual of how the banks should be populated

Review the documentation for your system and specific configuration - if you want to add 16GB with two processors, you would have to do an 8GB DIMM on each CPU and you can't use UDIMM's ... you should try to match your DIMM's within the guidelines:
