Hello,

I just received an error stating that my start up disk was full in my email Microsoft Entourage. It says

"Entourage Database requires additional space. Entourage will now quit so you can make more space available on your hard disk by moving/deleting files".

How do I delete these files. I clicked on my Macintosh HD but don't know where to go from there. Thank you for your help.

You just need to delete some of your older "back-up" files

Hi, This is what I did. I went into my documents folder, clicked on Microsoft User Data, Office 2004 Identities, and deleted an old main identities folder. It still didn't work. I'm not extremely computer savy when it comes to this so I apologize for not understanding. In my Main Identity folder, I have 5 things...Database, Mailing lists, Old Database, Rules, signatures. Am I suppose to be deleting something within these files? I just want to be sure I'm deleting the correct things....

In the first example in that link there are around half a dozen backup folders listed by date, if you're seeing around the same number I'd suggest you aim to delete all the folders with the exception of the current"Main Identity 1" and maybe the two most recent backups if you're happy with how Entourage has been running (the pessimistic alternative is to save the oldest and newest in case something went wrong in between times!).  That should just leave you the three and should recover you easily enough space.  You don't need to open the folders and delete parts of their content.  Don't touch the "Main Identity 1" folder that contains the live Office files.

Are you using Finder (safer) or Command line to delete the folders?

When you say "It still didn't work." do you mean the flder didn't delete or Entourage still wouldn't run?

Don't worry about being computer savvy, once you've worked out to do this you'll be an expert when someone who doesn't know how to do it asks - you just need to be a page further ahead in the manual :)

Hi, I am not seeing the half dozen backup folders. I don't have anything like that. In addition to the Main identity folder files I listed above, I also have this:
Microsoft 2004 Identities:
Main Identity Folder (this is the one listed above which I believe would be my main email folder, correct?).
Another folder that says -  Main identities [Backed up 2-10-2014 17.45].
then there is a last file here that says  - Newsgroup Cache.

When I click on the "Back up folder I listed above", there is only one file in it that says "rules". Is that what I'm suppose to be deleting. And no, I still can't get into Entourage.

When I delete these and they go in my trash, should the trash be emptied right away as well or does it matter?

Main Identity Folder (this is the one listed above which I believe would be my main email folder, correct?).      correct
Another folder that says -  Main identities [Backed up 2-10-2014 17.45]. This (whole folder) could be deleted but seems to be your only backup
then there is a last file here that says  - Newsgroup Cache. should be small enough to be ignored

How much free-space does the drive currently show?  I'm now wondering if these folders aren't the problem and you've just run out of storage space  period.

& yes throw out the content of Trash

Yup, I think that's where the problem is. My Macintosh HD shows capacity of 159.7 GB and zero available. I have over 13,000 pictures on my imac, I'm guessing I could start deleting some from there.? I did back up my files and Main Identities folder a couple of months ago as well on an external hard drive. Will getting rid of pictures help?

Yes, but depending on your average image size you're going to need to delete quite a few to make significant space - if each is 100KB then removing 1,000 will give you back ~ 1GB.

Any other suggestions on what I could delete to make this work? Should I delete files in my Entourage Email itself? I have files saved to folders there I could get rid of as well. Just not sure what to get rid of ......

Question, In my Iphoto Library folder, I have the same pictures in my "Data Folder" as I do in my "Originals Folder". If I delete the contents of the "Data" Folder, will everything still remain in my "Originals Folder"? Or does it wipe both of them out at the same time? Trying to delete without wiping my system clean....

Firstly photos won't make space unless you specifically empty them from Trash in iPhoto.  Then you can look in all the usual places to save space, check your downloads folder and apps for anything you've installed but never really use.  Also think about iTunes, any videos/music you've not played for ages?  delete them (You can always download again if the mood takes you!).

It's a while since I played on a MacBook but there is a utility called OnyX that will also clean out a lot of unwanted stuff too.

If you're really at a loss of what else to move you can gain about 2GB from simply deleting the non-English language files.

I have nothing in my downloads folder and I got rid of a couple of apps (ichat and imove, I've never used either). I did delete some itunes as well. I looked under utilities and I could not see the OnyX (could it be named something else?).

Where do I find the non-English language files?...I don't need those either. Right now my computer shows Capacity of 159.7 and Available: 941.6MB. So it's better but still have a ways to go, don't I? What would your professional view point on this be as to how much available space I should actually have so I don't have to see this message for a while?

OnyX here

Monolingual (to remove all the other language files) here

Try to keep about 5% free.

Despite the current news headlines perhaps think about offloading your images to cloud storage if you need to get to them away from an external drive backup.

Thank you so much. I'm up to 1.2 GB available and climbing...slowly, but I'm in the right direction any how. I went through and deleted old email files as well in my inbox and sent box.

I'm going to look into the cloud storage for my pics as well.

Thank you again for hanging in there with me today. It's greatly appreciated!

Have a great rest of the week!
