SEPM Clients not showing up in the SEPM console.

Implementing SEPM client test installations and I have two clients that on the client end say they have received the updates, but do not appear in the SEPM console. They get the shield in the icons box, but no green dot. From these clients, I can ping the SEPM server, but they read that they cannot connect to it. The clients have been rebooted. All seems well on the client side, except they cannot connect to the SEPM server.
The 2 workstations and 1 laptop that installed successfully and appear in the SEPM console did not have a previous installations of SEP. Whereas, the 2 unsuccessful installations both had previous installations of SEP from a different SEP server, which will eventually be decommed.
First question : Should "Automatically uninstall existing security software" be enabled to remove these previous SEP client installations before installing a newer version?
Second question: Can you suggest any steps I should take to get these clients to be recognized by the SEPM server, ie, remove previous SEP installations before installing upgraded SEP versions from a different SEP server?
