Network Security

Hi

I was wondering if anyone could provide me with some help. I have been given a project to carry out a network security review on our current network.

Can anyone suggest a program that would be able to test our network security or give some guidance on what all I would need to check to ensure our network is safe?

You could start with a free program from Microsoft called Microsoft Security Compliance Manager (SCM) 3.0

Am I right in thinking if "Microsoft" and "Customized" are both the same ie (Not Defined) that means it passes that area of security?
I would use a scanner like openVAS to find network vulnerabilities.  I can offer a bit of support if you want to go that route.
I have never used openVAS before, how can I install it?

This is a huge field. If you don't know what to check, I would say you are the wrong person to do it, because judging security measures and their implementation is really expert's work. You cannot become a security expert just by using expert's tools.

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying, leave it alone, but rather tell you to find someone already experienced and give him the job.
I'm inclined to agree with McKnife.  If you don't have the staff to perform this, you could hire a consultant, or there are even companies which can offer this as a service.
I googled "how to install openvas" and got this link: http://www.openvas.org/install-packages.html
