USe of APR (APR based Apache Tomcat Native library)

Hi,
What is the use of apache native library in tomcat, why its it required?
Please provide more details on the below features
Features of the APR connector:
Non-blocking I/O for Keep-Alive requests (between requests)
Uses OpenSSL for TLS/SSL capabilities (if supported by linked APR library)
FIPS 140-2 support for TLS/SSL (if supported by linked OpenSSL library)

there is a dynamic project having 1 jsp and 2 servlets running on standalone tomcat? how is the APR useful in such cases?

It is not required at all. Java has native sockets since v1.4 that makes (1) moot.
Do you use SSL? OpenSSL is more maunstream than java
Are you in US Government? OpenSSL has FIPS support on some platforms

In all other cases just disregard that text.
