ESXi 5.x VSphere Client Download From Host

I understand that ESXi does not contain the install files for the vsphere client in order to keep the install size small and directs people to the internet. This is fine but I have run into problems where a host does not have access to the internet and if you do not have the vpshere client files else where you are up a creak.

Can a newer vSphere client (5.5) manage ESXi host of a different version like 5.1 or 5.0. I seem to run into the problem where each host wants to be managed by the vsphere client version is matches... Any way around this?

This is an interesting post, and an issue my recent work colleagues fell into......because a scheduled power down, took down the Internet, so the Website Link from ESXi 5.5 install was not available, they managed to find an installation of ESXi 5.5 client on our network, but I forgot to put the older clients which are REQUIRED to be INSTALLED also!

So when trying to connect to ESXi 5.1 and 5.0 servers IT FAILED, using the ESXi 5.5 client, because it needs to have the 5.0 and 5.1 DLLs.

So there is no workaround other than ensuring you have copies of

4.0
4.1
5.0
5.1
5.5

vSphere Clients (C#)  on your network, Dropbox, Google Drive, or USB Flash drive to hand!

And we will not have this issue with 6.0, which is Web Client! (other than you will need Flash installed!)

Or course, if using vCenter Server, you can use the Web Client!

It would be nice is ESXi came with an ultra thin vsphere client that could be downloaded from the host directly.
