SBS 2008 to Windows 2012 R2 / Windows server essentials experience -Azure

Hi,

I have a customer who want to migrate an onsite SBS 2008 to the cloud. I was considering a Windows 2012 R2 server with the windows server essentials role on the Azure platform maybe?

Would I need a WIndows Azure AD too?

They would like to access the server for T/S services too however don't think you can have terminal services on a DC.
I can see there is a migration path from SBS to this. I would implement Office 365 too.

Do anyone recommend having the only DC in the cloud on a private virtual network?

Would anyone recommend another platform or solution?

Azure AD is an entirely different *thing* than AD. whether you choose expose it or not is really beyond the "essentials" question, and even the O365 question.

No TS on essentials. You could create another VM. Or use the relatively new Azure RemoteApp.

Ultimately the question of whether to move your DC to the cloud boils down to the reasons why? Cost? Probably more expensive in the cloud. Easier administration? Definitely harder in the cloud. Easier to add storage? Easier in the cloud. Provide better uptime? Definitely easier to do in the cloud. Remote access? Cloud.

So as you can see, it is about managing expectations.
