Mail beacon for internal exchange email

I want to send a newsletter to internal users. I want to know how many users are opening the mail. Is it possible to find this out without using a read receipt as most users won't click on the receipt. I don't want to use an external service as this opens up issues like keeping the list of AD users up to date. It's exchange 2007
Thanks.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

didtheyreadit.com is an external service but is does not require AD integration.

It's not quite clear how it works. There must be a mail beacon there somewhere and outlook will auto block it so the stats you get back are dependent on now just the user opening the mail but the user selecting to display blocked content unless I am mistaken.

It works great they show you how it works on the site and there is also a free trial of it for less than 10 recipients or something.

Making Bulk Changes to Active Directory

Watch this video to see how easy it is to make mass changes to Active Directory from an external text file without using complicated scripts.

There would be all sorts of privacy implications for using that service as you are adding their domain on the end of each email so routing mail through their servers.  That would send internal mail externally, they seem to be just adding a mail beacon on the mail from their end so unfortunately its the same problem just a different route.

I have concluded that its not possible to do this without the use of external software.
