Help with decision on Exchange 2013 DAG - Where to put filesharewitness

Hi All,

I have 2 new exchange 2013 mailboxes. Both servers have both the CAS and MAILBOX role in one. One is hosted at our primary site and a secondary at our DR site.

Previously with our co-existing 2010 environment, we had 4 servers. We had 2 CAS servers and 2 mailbox servers. We had our files hare witness held on one of the CAS servers for the DAG across both Mailbox servers.

As we have now downsized our environment, where would be the best location to have the file share witness? I ask because both servers are now mailbox servers. Is it safe to put it on one of those servers? Is it best practice? Would it be possible to load the file share witness on a completely different server? (Windows Server 2008 r2).

The new DAG will only be temprary as we are planning to carry out a hybrid deployment and migrate all of our mailboxes onto Exchange online and once this has been completed there will be no requirement to have DAG.

Can any one provide me with some advice?

Thanks

You cannot use the mailbox servers for FSW. You can use any server in your network.
I suggest you use your fileserver/DHCP server as your FSW for DAG.

Hi MAS,

Can this location be changed afterwards? We are upgrading all of our servers to Windows Server 2012 starting with Exchange. The fileserver will remain as a Windows Server 2008 for a few months which would be the location I will want to place the FSW.

Kind regards,
Jayson

Yes you can change the FSW anytme. But you must add the Exchange Trusted Subsystem universal security group to the local Administrators group on the witness server. Please check for details.

Glad to know it is fixed.
But why the grade is B (Good) not A (Excellent). Please let me know if you are not clear on my comments as I can improve my comments for future.
