I keep getting this error message could not start a session with the iphone<br />

I am running ios 7.1.2 on my iphone 5s<br />

and i want to put 8....it just keeps saying extracting software and then i get that error message <br />

i also cannot backup the iphone as well<br />

i have the lastest itunes<br />

any idea how to fix this and get ios 8????
