Netflix has not (yet) implemented a fully working solution for subtitles in its streaming engine.
Only a limited selection of movies in the streaming library have closed captioning available within Netflix which is different from a new language using srt,,and there is no multi-language availability.
So if you want to display subtitles in a foreign language for one of the Hollywood movies on Netflix, you maybe limited with your current setup. Or at least so it seems on the surface for now and from what I have read.
When you look at the select your device from this " How do I adjust subtitles, captions and alternate audio on my device?" the raspberry pi is not mentioned let alone the Playon or the server menu? only PC or mac, So if the movie has a caption or a sub title added and is available try using that.

I have not done this so your details help me, and as we don't have Netflix
in Australia I have to use my imagination and knowledge base combined with
some sources.
What is on your TV Screen? The Playon menu ? Netflix?
Try holding the play button for a few seconds while inside Netflix and
streaming a movie
It should bring up a menu to select the Closed Captioning language.
try these, this one is from Playon
