Setting a mailbox to forward messages to DL with text addresses

I have setup a mailbox in Exchange 2010.  On the mailbox I have set a rule to forward all emails to a DL.  The DL is mail-enabled and has other user mailboxes and contacts for iPhone text messaging addresses (e.g. 202-123-4567@vtext.com) as members.  When i send an email to the new mailbox, it does forward the emails to the user mailboxes in the list, but not to the text messaging addresses.  When i send an email directly to the DL, user mailboxes get the email and the iPhones get the text messages.  Is there some limitation on Exchange that prevents text messages from being forwarded from a mailbox to a DL when it comes to text addresses?

Auto forward in Outlook to external email addresses would not work due to obvious security reasons. If permitted by your company policies you can enable automatic forward options in the default remote domain (organization configuration) and set auto forwarding on server side using transport rule or mailbox properties.

That was it.  We turned it on and sent test messages fine.  Since it is a security concern, we will do this a different way and turn this back off again.
