How can i use bootstrap grid system for the attached sort of design?

im just confused how i can make the above design split up into 12 columns

It is 960px. The container has 40px padding either side so the main content area is 880px; How can i split the rest into 12 columns with the 24px margins (shown in design above)?

That design will likely not work in a Bootstrap layout, point of using Bootstrap is for a responsive layout. Your template looks like an hard 'coded' design/images.
Bootstrap doesn't have a a 960 wide template, look at the article and you can see the various fixed widths and these are based on a 15px padding.
