Does anyone have any recommendations for local printers which work on a 2012 R2 RDS server?  We currently have several USB HP printers connected locally but they are not compatible.

Need to be small ones for individual users to print off small documents quickly.

The local machines are a mixture of Windows XP and Windows 7.

Thanks

I would get a small HP laserjet that has PCL drivers.  Stay away from any HP printers that only use host-based drivers.

The beauty of using an HP with PCL is that even if the printer doesn't have a driver for your older machines, you can use a similar model driver that is available for XP, like the HP LaserJet 4, LaserJet 4000.  If you're looking for color, we had luck with the HP LaserJet Color 400 Pro M451 which worked well in a 2008 R2 server environment.   A cheaper black & white alternative is the HP LaserJet P2035. HP only provides a host-based driver for that model, but it is compatible with the PCL 5 printer language, so we found it worked well in both Server 2003 & 2008 using the HP LaserJet P2015 PCL 5e driver.

Unfortunately, I don't have much experience working with Server 2012 terminal servers, but if you stick with PCL-compatible printers, it will probably work.

Good luck!
