Do these files have an extension? Like .idlk?
Mac or a pc?

It's been a while since I used 5.5 and I don't have it on my mac anymore.
I would guess these are temp files. You will only need the original InDesign file and linked files for your project so everything else can be deleted.

However it is not wise to delete temp files while you are working on the ID files and furthermore you can't delete them while the related ID document is open. The temp files make it possible for InDesign to recover a job when it has crashed among other things to they are vital while you are working.

It's possible that your computer needs freshening up since it doesn't delete there files or maybe trashing InDesign's preference file might fix that too.
