Cannot display performacepoint data from SSAS tabular model

I am using dashboard designer 2013 with performacepoint and am trying to setup an analytical report. I have a tabular model on my SQL Server 2012. The tabular model works well when creating reports but I cannot get any data to show when connecting my performance point. I created a data source connection  to a multi-dimensional cube and it "appear" to connect but when creating the report, it says I do not have permission. I have a feeling the issue is the fact that I have a tabular model and this connection type and a multi-dimensional cube. There is no tabular model in the options for dashboard designer 2013....can I connect to a tabular model? if so, how?
