Hello Experts - I am budgeting for next year and need to replace approximately five older 2003 servers.  I'm trying to determine which version of Server 2008 to purchase for my upgrade.  They will run as VMs under Vcenter 5.1.  Purely from a licensing perspective, which version of 2008 should I purchase considering I need five instances?

Get 2008 R2 Data center edition and CALs
The costing of Data center edition is 2900$ approx. + CALs separate
This will helps you in case your VMware 5.1 is having more hardware capacity and you wish to run more servers than 5, that is possible without additional licenses as you can run unlimited VMs on data center editions

Great, that's what I had hoped.  Just to be clear, if I spent the roughly $3k for the datacenter edition I can run as many VMs under VMware (not hyper-v) as I want without any additional costs?

VMware and windows licensing are different terms

Once you get Data center license, you are entitled to run unlimited VMs no matter you run it with VMware \ Hyper-V

No need to spent extra money
