message tracking logs

We need to recover some old message tracking logs from an older backup of exchange server. Is there any additional 3rd party tool that could be used to import the logs and analyse/search them? Outside of exchange?

As long as you have log files, you could use any of the following products to analyze the logs:

Splunk (my number 1 choice)
Log Parser and Log Parser Studio (#2 choice and written by Exchange team)
Log Analysis Tool (download from sourceforge.net)
LOGAlyze
LogStash

I actually have log parser studio installed - but dont exactly know what you do...

I.e. how do you actually see the content.

Which version of Exchange are you running?  If you are running 2010 or higher, this is what you need to do:

1.  Launch application and import your tracking logs
2.  From the library list, select what message tracking stats you want
3.  Right click and click on Run Now

Please note that the latest Log Parser Studio does not support Exchange 2007 and for that, you would need the older version.
