New Office 365 Setup Problem - Education A2 plan

Hi All.  I have setup an Office365 A2 (Education) trial and have a domain registered with 1&1.  I set the MX record to the ***.invalid.*** string as requested by the setup process and successfully validated the domain.  Priority is 100 and there are no other MX records set.  However, although I can send email from the Office365 webmail client I can not receive any emails.  Looking around at some other postings others have had this problem.  Should Microsoft have provided additional MX  /  DNS details post domain validation?
