Excel 2010 smartart has no "find and replace" function. it is Gray Shaded

----------- here is my problem --------------

I create a smartart "list" by opening a new workbook and keying "alt N M <enter>"

(I could have used the "insert > Illustrations group > smartart"  ribbon buttons instead, but that doesn't matter.)

I then key the word "test" into several of the list boxes.

On the ribbon I use "Home > editting group > find and select" and discover that "replace" is gray shaded.

I conclude that my version of Excel 2010 is either corrupted or simply has a bug.  Does anybody have any similar problems.

----- here is a little history of my situation ---------

In Ms Word I  tried to change an organizational chart so that 20 occurrences of "Assistant" are replaced by "Asst".  MS Word hangs with 100% cpu usage until I hit the escape key.

I then tried switching to Excel 2010 and discovered that smartart's find and replace function is completely disabled.

Hi rberke,

You do not have a bug, exactly, but it is a buggy feature of Microsoft products that many features do not work the same across products. There is a similar issue with Quick Parts from Outlook to Microsoft Word.

The issue is the same in version 2013 of Excel as well: You cannot find nor replace text in Smart Art in Excel

Hope that helps

I "Solved" a small part of the problem.  I copied the organization chart to PowerPoint then made the changes there with no problem.

But, this question is not about org charts it is about the find and replace function for Smartart. In both Excel 2010 and 2013 that dialog is gray shaded when Smartart is selected. I expect MS will say "working as designed", which would make the problem impossible to solve.

If no one comes up with a good response, I will leave this problem open for a week and then PAQ it.

I agree with your answer.

Smartart is not fully supported in Excel and Word.

Powerpoint and visio and seem  to support it better.
