Server 2012 R2 DFS File servers in Server 2008 R2 Domain

I am planning to install DFS Namespace on two new Server 2012 R2 member servers. But, we do not have Server 2012 or 2012 R2 domain controllers in the domain. Is it required for running DFS on Server 2012 R2 member server?

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

No. But very old DC environments (2000/2003) will have issues. DFS was introduced with 2003 R2 with its associated schema changes, but the newer the DCs, the better.

I quote below from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/jj127250.aspx

Update the Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) schema to include Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008, or Windows Server 2003 R2 schema additions. (If you install a domain controller running Windows Server 2012 the schema is automatically updated.) You cannot use read-only replicated folders with the Windows Server 2003 R2 or older schema additions.

Does it mean the AD needs to be prepared with Server 2012 schema first?

No. It needs to be prepared with one one of the listed OSes.

AD must have Server 2012 schema prepared in order to have Server 2012 R2 DFS member server.
