Hello,

Title is probably self-explanatory but is there any way to discover the program that was used to write a DDS backup tape?

Thanks.

The backup program wrote some identifying information into the first or second block of the tape so that it can identify tapes it created.  If you're lucky, the identifying information is ASCII text and it will suggest which program wrote the tape.

Get a hex dump program.  Read blocks 0 and 1 of the tape and dump them in ASCII format.  Among the gibberish you'll probably see the creation date and time, and perhaps something like "BXBAKP" which would indicate the tape was written by Brand X Backup.
