We are able to purchase Comcast compatible modems.

Are we able to purchase Comcast compatible analog to digital converters or is that a no go because the signal is encrypted?

What do you mean by "Comcast compatible analog to digital converters"?  Are you talking about the cable TV receivers (aka set top boxes)?  Comcast will let you buy your own but they won't provide support for it even if it is the same as one they would provide.  You do need to contact Comcast to make sure that the box you get will work on the service they provide.  I have their HD receiver for another $10 a month and it had to be "provisioned" by them to work.

My wife has an older tv so a analog to digital converter is needed. I have replaced the Comcast modem.

Digital Transport Adapter is the more correct name. See attached picture.

You keep saying modem but that term usually means an internet connection.  A TV connection is provided by a 'set top box' and this page lists the ones that Comcast has approved:  http://customer.comcast.com/help-and-support/cable-tv/cable-box-user-manuals   Another name for the digital to analog converter is a DTV converter but that is mainly for 'over the air' signals.
