What permissions does the BEADMIN account need to perform nightly backups? Currently our jobs are tied to the domain admin profile and I will like to change that. Same permissions or can they be scaled down some?

It does need domain admin rights. If it is backing up Exchange it will need Exchange Full Admin rights also.
