puppet client is not taking new hostname

my puppet server should be puppet.example.com but its expecting old hostname for some reason. How do i fix this .

On the puppet master server and the puppet agent client, can you issue this:

hostname -f

The result may help you understand a potential misconfiguration.

I would look at the /etc/hosts file on both servers.  This could have a mapping of an IP address to an older name.  I would also do this command (with root permissions):

find . -name resolv.conf

This will show you where the resolv.conf file is.  That file may have the servers pointing to a DNS server.  That server may have a cache that wants a Puppet server to resolve to what an Administrator may think of as "old."  The DNS server could be the problem or part of the problem.
