I have an instance of Server 2012 r2 that won't start up from the saved state it gets to about 90% and then gives the error:

synthetic scsi controller failed to finish reserving resources 0x80070002

There doesn't seem to be much on the net about this, can anyone advise what steps should be taken to recover from this?

Please ignore this question I have figured out what the issue was, it appears when the host machine rebooted after applying Windows Updates it had lost the connection to a backup drive that is plugged into the host machine. When I removed and then plugged the USB drive back in it re-appeared in the disk manager and then the virtual machine would boot up.

Don't understand why Hyper-V refuses to start just because a backup drive is not connected?
