Can't delete data from Sharepoint 2010 - database full error 80131904

We have an issue with a SharePoint Foundation 2010 (SBS 2011) site which is full (10GB).

So we have copied data from a couple of the folders on the server and stored them locally as these can be archived off the database. However, although I can delete a couple of the files from the site, after a while I hit error 80131904 (which is the database is full).

So I am unable to clear the files out of the recycle bin and also we cannot add files to the database.

I have been able to connected using SQL Management Studio and can shrink the database/files, however, this is by a minute amount and then I can possibly delete one file and then we are back in the same situation.

There must be a better way than this to clear out files from the database - I'd be grateful for ideas and/or assistance.

We will be moving this database to a hosted sharepoint environment, but first we need to be able to clear some of the data from the database itself.

I would recommed the following general process:

Make a backup of the site.
Then export the site out.
Then delete the site and create a new one.
Import the site back in.
If their is a problem you can restore your backup.
