Brother LaserFax Fax machine won't receive faxes, error: "Ext Tel in use"

My customer's fax machine works "intermittently".  Sometimes it sends and receives, other times it will just send.   Today the error message is "Ext Tel in use" when somebody sends a fax.  I am able to call out on the line.

It is a Brother LaserFax Super G3.

Thanks for any tips, I don't usually deal with these units.

Make sure that the landline is connected to 'Line In' on the fax machine and connect the telephone to the 'Line Out' on the fax machine.

Good suggestion.

As it happens, I think that either the phone line is somehow defective or the fax machine is somehow defective.

I'm giving up.
