Is there any independent site that evaluated whether this software is any good/necessary/detrimental?
Should I trust the Intel web site's narrative?

So far as I can tell, it doesn't seem to have any "bad" side effects.
Whether you install it or not, depends on if you want it to help keep OEM equipment on your network updated (more of a yes for a business, no for home use).
