Windows Server Backup Email Notifcations

I'm running Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard and would like to receive email notifications whenever our nightly backup succeeds or fails. Would love a step-by-step on how to set this up.

Do you have an anonymously configured receive connector on your exchange?

We have our Exchange server hosted by another group offsite. We do have an SMTP server here as part of our Polaris ILS system.

I may scrap this idea as we are getting new servers in a couple of weeks. I'll revisit once they are in play.
