Script to check availability of service based on port.

Hello,
Could you please provide me with script to check the availability of vpn service for example based on port i mean like telnet command then to send email if it fails ?

would suggest using nagios/icinga/prtg for this job.
SSL-VPN and PPTP should be possible.
But monitoring IPsec-VPN is not so simple, because not TCP is used for session initiation.
