How do I highlight the selected tab of my asp:Menu control?

Through my research, I've not been able to get any suggested solutions to work to help me solve this. I have a standard asp:Menu control and I want to highlight the selected tabs dynamically as they are chosen. How do I do this in C#  or any other easy / effective way (I'm open to javascript [jQuery], but would prefer a C# solution if possible)?

Here is my HTML:

I found this code:

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/8053337/asp-net-4-highlight-menu-item-for-current-page?answertab=votes#tab-top

and converted it to C# and put it n my Site.Master.cs file, but id didn't work and I didn't know what or where to put this line:

"NavigationMenu.Items(i).Selected = True" as it didn't seem to be dynamically choosing the correct selected menu item.

    protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
    {
        SelectMenuByValue(NavigationMenu.SelectedValue, NavigationMenu);
    }

    public void SelectMenuByValue(string sValue, Menu NavigationMenu)
    {
        int iMenuCount = NavigationMenu.Items.Count - 1;
        for (int i = 0; i <= iMenuCount; i++)
        {
            MenuItem menuItem = NavigationMenu.Items[i];
            if (menuItem.Value == sValue)
            {
                if (menuItem.Enabled && menuItem.Selectable)
                    menuItem.Selected = true;
                break; // TODO: might not be correct. Was : Exit For
            }
            if (CheckSelectSubMenu(menuItem, sValue))
                break; // TODO: might not be correct. Was : Exit For
        }
    }

    private bool CheckSelectSubMenu(MenuItem menuItem, string sValue)
    {
        bool functionReturnValue = false;
        functionReturnValue = false;
        int iMenuCount = menuItem.ChildItems.Count - 1;
        for (int i = 0; i <= iMenuCount; i++)
        {
            MenuItem subMenuItem = menuItem.ChildItems[i];
            if (subMenuItem.Value == sValue)
            {
                functionReturnValue = true;
                if (subMenuItem.Enabled && subMenuItem.Selectable)
                    subMenuItem.Selected = true;
                break; // TODO: might not be correct. Was : Exit For
            }
            if (CheckSelectSubMenu(subMenuItem, sValue))
            {
                functionReturnValue = true;
                break; // TODO: might not be correct. Was : Exit For

        return functionReturnValue;
