Sharepoint 2010 backup never starts

When I go into Sharepoint central administration and start a backup it sits at "Preparing current backup/restore job. If the backup/restore job does not begin after five minutes, make sure that the Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Timer Service is running." and never does anything else.

I've checked and the Sharepoint 2010 timer service is running and I've tried restarting it as well which made no difference.

I've made sure that it's going to a UNC path and granted "everyone" full access to that share.

Any advice on what to try next?

1. Did you check of the backup timer job is running /started?
2. before you start , do you see any job tat hanging in there unfinished and stitting there for a while ? if yes kill it and then restart sharepoint timer service and then kick of the backup.
3.See if you can successfully backup using PS

Could not resolve in the end so just recreated the sharepoint and manually copied the data across.
