I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I'm sure you'll get many suggestions for GFI MailArchiver ( but I would also like to recommend MailStore from Deepinvent (  I find MailStore to be more user-friendly, have a better mobile interface and is easier to manage.  However, the widespread use and reliability of GFI should also be considered.  I've used both in various companies and either can do what you are looking for.  They both offer demo versions which allow you to sample the software, without disrupting your current Exchange setup, so maybe give them a try and see if they work for you?

Good luck!

Does anyone know of one in a self contained unit?

What do you mean by self-contained? A hardware appliance?

Short of another server altogether to act as a man-in-the-middle for emails, I do not know of any hardware appliances that will accomplish what you are seeking.  I have only ever seen software solutions that work with the existing MTA (i.e. Exchange in this case).  The two that I mentioned earlier are still my best recommendations as I have used them in many different deployments in the past successfully.  Barracuda Networks offers VMs and cloud solutions for what you are looking for also, but I do not *think* they are actual hardware appliances.
