In doing a Lync 2013 deployment, we have merged the ancient OCS2007r2 standard server into our Lync Topology.
My problem is that we are unable to chat across pools in either direction

The individuals can be searched for but information on their status and the ability to chat does not work.

Our OCS 2007r2 runs a single standard edition server that runs chat and the web interface, no other major features are enabled nor do we have an edge pool or anything special configured (don't you love inheriting stuff?)

Lync 2013 has been stood up with an internal enterprise pool running chat, monitoring and archiving.

What are some of the most obvious things that I should be looking for in solving the communications between the two pools?

I would suggest that you take a look at this Blog. Although they talk ab out OCS 2007r2 and Lync 2010, you should be able to follow what they did with your Lync 2013 environment.

That is a perfect article, I will need to add an Edge server to the OCS 2007r2 deployment in order to allow the two pools to talk to each other with federation enabled.

Thank you!
